Steamed Veg Momos Recipe: Perfect for Snacks or Appetizers

recipe for making delicious momos (steamed dumplings) at home:

Ingredients:

For the dough:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour (maida)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • Water (as needed to knead dough)

For the filling:

  • 1 1/2 cups finely chopped vegetables (cabbage, carrots, onions, mushrooms, or any vegetables of choice)
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1/2 tsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tsp vinegar (optional)
  • 1/4 cup chopped coriander leaves (optional)
  • 1/4 cup crumbled paneer or tofu (optional for a protein boost)

For steaming:

  • Water for steaming

Instructions:

1. Prepare the dough:

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt.
  • Gradually add water and knead the mixture into a smooth, soft dough (similar to pizza dough).
  • Cover with a damp cloth and set aside for 20-30 minutes.

2. Prepare the filling:

  • Heat oil in a pan. Add the ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a minute.
  • Add the chopped vegetables and cook for 3-4 minutes, just until they soften slightly. Avoid overcooking.
  • Add soy sauce, black pepper, salt, and vinegar. Stir well and cook for another minute.
  • Remove from heat and let the filling cool. Add chopped coriander and crumbled paneer or tofu (if using).

3. Shape the momos:

  • After the dough has rested, divide it into small equal portions (about 12-15 balls).
  • Roll each portion into a thin round (about 3 inches in diameter) using a rolling pin.
  • Place a teaspoon of the prepared filling in the center of each round.
  • Fold the edges of the dough together, pleating them as you go, and pinch them at the top to seal the momo.

4. Steam the momos:

  • Grease a steamer or a steaming basket with a little oil or line it with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  • Arrange the momos in the steamer, leaving a little space between each.
  • Bring water to a boil in the steamer and then place the momos inside.
  • Steam the momos for about 10-15 minutes, or until the dough becomes slightly translucent and cooked through.

5. Serve:

  • Serve the hot momos with a side of dipping sauce, such as a spicy red chili sauce or soy sauce.

Enjoy your homemade momos!
